Global Fund Approves New HIV Grant for Kenya

April 27, 2006

On Wednesday, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria announced a $70 million, three-year grant for Kenya. The new money follows a three-year, $37 million grant to Kenya that ended this year with concerns about documentation that Kenya submitted too late to qualify for a final disbursement of $10 million. "The results from the audit did not come back until after Phase 1 [the first grant period] had closed," said Global Fund spokesperson Rosie Vanek. "The second phase of Kenya's HIV grant is going forward." The Global Fund's executive board is meeting Thursday in Geneva to discuss whether to fund the next round of international programs in 2006; this could require an additional $1 billion from donors.
