Zambian Sex Workers Record Increasing HIV Infection
June 29, 2006 HIV prevalence among sex workers surveyed in 2003 and 2006 in the Zambian cities of Livingstone, Chirundu, and Kapiri Mposhi ranged from 50 percent to 80 percent, according to a US Agency for International Development representative quoted Thursday in the Post. "HIV testing of commercial sex workers indicated extreme HIV prevalence among these high-risk women ranging from 50 percent to 80 percent," said Marta Levitt-Dayal, USAID country representative. "This confirms the need for continued support of interventions for high-risk groups that reduce the number of partners and promote consistent and correct use of condoms."
