Senate Rejects Omnibus Spending Bill Amendment on Ryan White Funding Allocation

The Senate on Monday voted on several amendments to the $410 billion fiscal year 2009 omnibus spending package (H.R. 1105), CongressDaily reports. One of the amendments -- proposed by Sen. Michael Enzi (R-Wy.), ranking member on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee -- would have removed language from the bill "that would result in larger cities receiving more HIV/AIDS funding" under the Ryan White Program. The Senate voted 53-42 to reject the amendment, according to CongressDaily. The bill would increase spending over FY 2008 levels by about 8%, or $30 billion. Federal programs under the bill are currently being funded at FY 2008 levels by a continuing resolution that expires on Wednesday, CongressDaily reports (Sanchez/Friedman, CongressDaily, 3/10).
