Florida: Brochure on HIV, Religion Is Pulled

April 7, 2003

The Florida Department of Health on Friday recalled an AIDS education brochure after the American Civil Liberties Union said it promotes Christian beliefs instead of health education. "A Christian Response to AIDS" quotes Bible passages to urge compassion for people with HIV/AIDS. The ACLU complained the brochure, with the agency's logo on the cover, improperly mixes religious beliefs with health messages. "I'm glad the state responded so quickly to the concerns in our letter," said Howard Simon, executive director of the ACLU of Florida.
