North Carolina: Grant Given for AIDS Outreach

Charlotte-based Regional AIDS Interfaith Network has won a $130,000 grant to expand its outreach to people with HIV/AIDS. The Ford Foundation gift, announced today in New York, will be used to educate Carolinians about the disease and inspire congregations of all faiths to help those with HIV/AIDS. Founded in 1992, RAIN is one of 20 Ford Foundation recipients chosen from 1,400 applicants. RAIN has organized care teams in 97 congregations to provide practical and spiritual support, taking patients to medical appointments and praying at bedsides. The nonprofit, interfaith ministry wants to offer pastoral counseling to patients and provide chaplain's services to infectious-disease clinics. It also wants to work with more African-American congregations and to work to ease the stigma of AIDS.
