Chicago: HIV, AIDS Groups Get $1 Million
June 27, 2003 On Thursday, the AIDS Foundation of Chicago awarded $1.2 million in grants for local HIV/AIDS prevention organizations to fund programs to fight the disease. With an average grant of $15,000, some 55 agencies will start or maintain programs that target hard-to-reach populations and fund programs such as needle exchanges, said Mark Ishaug, AFC executive director. "One of the great things about our private grant-making program is that it allows agencies to do innovative programs that are often not funded or fundable under government guidelines. Some of the activities and programs might be considered more controversial but we believe that they will really stem the spread of HIV," said Ishaug. He added that AFC received funds from individuals and corporate organizations.
