Caracole Inc., a Cincinnati not-for-profit AIDS housing organization, on Thursday announced that it has received a $1 million contribution from a local philanthropist, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Officials plan to use the money -- the largest donation in the history of the agency -- to establish an endowment to help "meet the changing and future needs of people affected by HIV and AIDS," according to the Enquirer. "This gift came to us because a concerned citizen knew the tremendous need in our community," Sue Butler, executive director of Caracole, said, adding, "Caracole's need for support is greater than ever due to shrinking government funds and increasing need for AIDS services." The agency operates two residential communities, a shelter care program and a technology assistance program serving more than 100 local housing and social service agencies. Caracole officials would not release the name of the donor at his or her request (Aldridge, Cincinnati Enquirer, 8/15).
