National HIV Conference to Address Many LGBT Topics

On Aug. 25, a town hall meeting on a national AIDS strategy will feature Jeff Crowley, the openly gay appointed by President Obama in February as director of the Office of National AIDS Policy. The town hall is the first of many on the topic the Obama administration has promised to hold nationwide.

While in Atlanta, Crowley will visit several area AIDS organizations, including AIDS Alliance for Faith & Health (AAFH), Positive Impact, and Project Open Hand, all located at the 139 Center at 139 Ralph McGill Blvd.

"The 139 Center is a unique, effective, and vital collaboration of both programs and agencies providing comprehensive mental health, prevention, and care services in a comfortable and supportive setting," said Positive Impact's Paul Plate.

"We are honored that Mr. Crowley asked to visit the 139 Center. AIDS services providers and public health officials from other major cities have toured the building before and have always been impressed with the intentional way we brought together an array of support services which complement and enhance one another," said Guy Pujol, executive director of AAFH. "This multi-agency cooperation not only benefits clients but helps save money for the organizations."

Numerous conference sessions will address topics of particular interest to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, including: "HIV Prevention in Young Diverse MSM (Men Who Have Sex with Men)," "Mobilizing Black Gay Men," and "Transgender Needs, Resources and Interventions."
