New York Times Examines How HIV/AIDS Affects Town in Swaziland

The New York Times on Sunday examined how "AIDS is steadily boring through the heart" of Lavumisa, a small town of 2,000 people in the kingdom of Swaziland, which is the size of New Jersey and has a population of one million people. Approximately two in five adults in Swaziland are HIV-positive, and life expectancy is an average of 34.4 years, the fourth lowest worldwide. Times reporters Michael Wines and Sharon LaFraniere recently spent five weeks speaking with more than 60 residents of the town, "following the terrible ripples that an unrestrained epidemic is sending through the community" (Wines/LaFraniere, New York Times, 11/28).
