Global Fund Appoints Australian Helen Evans as Secretariat's First Deputy Executive Director

April 13, 2005

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on Monday announced it has named Helen Evans, head of Australia's Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, to be the group's first deputy executive director, AAP/ninemsn.com reports. Evans, who was selected after a six-month search, will be second in command in the organization and will oversee the performance and management of the fund's secretariat (AAP/ninemsn.com, 4/13). Evans has 30 years of experience in senior management in health and social policy, including heading the Australian Department of Health and Ageing's HIV/AIDS and Communicable Diseases Branch, where she led the country's early response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, according to a Global Fund release. She also was involved in negotiations to establish UNAIDS and served as the Australian government's representative at the organization. "Helen Evans brings extensive management experience and the wisdom and sensitivity of a long career in a multicultural health environment," Global Fund Executive Director Richard Feachem, said, adding, "Her skill set complements mine and those of the other senior managers of the Global Fund. Helen will play a crucial role in taking the Global Fund from a rapidly growing startup to a mature, major financing institution" (Global Fund release, 4/11).
