Baylor College of Medicine Forms Pediatric Clinical Network; IAS Launches Future Directions Web Site; Study Examines Evaluation of Condom Effectiveness

• Baylor Children's Clinical Centers of Excellence Network: Baylor College of Medicine has received a $600,000 grant from Abbott Laboratories' Step Forward program to link Baylor's individual pediatric HIV clinics through the creation of the network. The network includes Baylor and local pediatric health care workers who provide care and treatment for 3,000 children in developing countries. The network's focus areas include training, research and best-practice collaboration (Joint ">release, 4/14).
  
  
• Future Directions Project: The International AIDS Society has launched the Web site for its Future Directions project, which aims to explore how the International AIDS Conference can have a maximum impact in the global response to the pandemic. Input received through the project's Web site is being used to inform planning for the XVI International AIDS Conference to be held in Toronto in August 2006 (IAS letter, 4/15).
  
  
• "Application of the Case-Crossover Design To Reduce Unmeasured Confounding in Studies of Condom Effectiveness," American Journal of Epidemiology: Lee Warner, a senior scientist with the CDC Division of Reproductive Health, and colleagues compare two ways to examine condom effectiveness in preventing transmission of the sexually transmitted diseases gonorrhea and chlamydia. The study concludes that condom effectiveness likely is underestimated in studies because of bias (Warner et al., American Journal of Epidemiology, 4/15).
