Global Fund Elects Head of Barbados' HIV/AIDS Commission as New Board Chair

April 25, 2005

The Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria on Friday elected as chair of the fund's board Dr. Carol Jacobs, who since 2001 has served as chair of Barbados' National HIV/AIDS Commission and helped expand the country's response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, according to a Global Fund release. Jacobs, who succeeds former HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson, has been a member of the Global Fund board since January 2004 as the representative for the Latin America and Caribbean regions. The fund on Friday also elected Michel Kazatchkine as the new vice chair of the board, replacing Dr. Helene Rossert-Blavier, director of the French nongovernmental organization AIDES. Kazatchkine, who is France's ambassador on HIV/AIDS and transmissible diseases, has worked as an immunologist in the HIV/AIDS field for about 20 years. The board's chair and vice chair positions, which each have two-year terms, alternate between being filled by a representative of a donor country and a representative of a recipient country (Global Fund release, 4/22).
