Los Angeles Times Profiles Kenyan Catholic Youth Organization's AIDS Messages in Light of Church's Ban on Condoms

April 25, 2005

The Los Angeles Times on Sunday profiled the Fish Youth Center, a Catholic youth organization in Kisumu, Kenya, where "condoms are no longer a matter of morality or theological doctrine" but "a question of survival." The Fish group in the 1990s began promoting condom use to prevent HIV infection "against the teachings of the church," the Times reports. However, the organization "succumbed to pressure" and no longer promotes condom use, after some local church leaders tried to close the group, according to the Times. Instead, the group is focusing on "less-controversial activities," including providing care to HIV-positive people and AIDS orphans, the Times reports (Sanders, Los Angeles Times, 4/24). The complete article is available online.
