Seattle Times Profiles Ugandan-American Playwright, Play About Ugandan Man Living With AIDS

The Seattle Times on Sunday profiled Ugandan-American actor and writer Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine and his play "Biro," which is about a Ugandan man who is living with AIDS and cannot access antiretroviral treatment until he settles illegally in the United States. Unlike earlier "theatrically elaborate and cosmopolitan" plays about characters living with HIV/AIDS, "Biro" has an "unadorned narrative style and global scope" and "represents the more typical human face of the disease today," according to the Times. Mwine said, "I wasn't trying to write a sermon or an education tool but tell a story and raise questions. And I wanted to show this new category of refugees in the world -- medical refugees" (Berson, Seattle Times, 4/3). The complete article is available online.
