"The World" Profiles Kenyan Physician Who Participated in HIV/AIDS Care Training Program at New York University's Bellevue Hospital

"The World" -- a production of BBC World Service, PRI and WGBH Boston -- on Tuesday profiled the experience of one of 27 Kenyan doctors invited by Family Health International to spend three weeks observing HIV/AIDS care practices at New York University's Bellevue Hospital, one of the "top centers" for HIV/AIDS care and research in New York City. The program seeks to provide visiting physicians with new methods of handling issues that arise during their work, such as treating opportunistic infections, encouraging HIV testing and referring patients to social programs that can provide assistance with the cost of HIV/AIDS treatments. An estimated 1.5 million people have died of AIDS-related illnesses in Kenya over the past 20 years, and approximately one in six HIV-positive people in the country are receiving antiretroviral drugs, PRI reports.
