AARP Magazine Profiles Actor, HIV/AIDS Advocate Richard Gere

January 4, 2005

The January/February issue of AARP Magazine profiles actor and HIV/AIDS advocate Richard Gere, who won an AARP 2005 Impact Award. Gere in 2002 formed Healing the Divide -- an organization "dedicated to helping communities in Asia, the Middle East and the United States tackle some of their most pressing social and cultural challenges." One of the organization's initial projects was an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign aimed at curbing the spread of the disease in India. "The Indian government has been slow to acknowledge the problem," Gere said, adding that "they have this window of opportunity of five to 10 years at the most, that if nothing is done, the numbers will be astronomical" (Griffin, AARP Magazine, January/February 2004). The complete article is available online.

A kaisernetwork.org interview with Gere from the XV International AIDS Conference that was held in July 2004 in Bangkok, Thailand, is available online.
