First Lady Laura Bush to Begin Visit to Africa to Promote AIDS Prevention, Women's Rights

First lady Laura Bush is expected to begin an official visit to Africa on Tuesday in Cape Town, South Africa, to promote HIV/AIDS prevention and women's rights on the continent, Reuters South Africa reports. Bush arrived in Botswana on Saturday after attending the Group of Eight industrialized nations summit in Gleneagles, Scotland, where leaders pledged to immediately double aid to Africa to $25 billion annually. Bush on Tuesday is scheduled to tour a program in Cape Town that aims to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission and a site where women produce bead products for export. She also will visit initiatives to help women and prevent HIV in Tanzania and Rwanda before returning to the United States on Friday (Reuters South Africa, 7/9).
