Recent News Releases: CHAMP in Rwanda; GlaxoSmithKline HIV/AIDS Collaboration in Kenya; Ms. Foundation 10-Point Call to Action to Fight AIDS Among Women; NO/AIDS Virtual AIDS Walk

October 24, 2005

  • Community HIV/AIDS Mobilization Program in Rwanda: The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief has chosen a consortium of organizations led by CHF International to implement CHAMP in Rwanda. The four-year, $40 million cooperative agreement will mobilize and strengthen Rwandan groups, institutions and the government to provide communities in the country with equitable access to HIV/AIDS services. Other groups involved with the consortium include Catholic Relief Services, Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs and Social Impact (CHF International release, 10/14).

  • "GlaxoSmithKline Initiates New HIV/AIDS Collaboration in Kenya": Pharmaceutical company GSK announced last week that it will collaborate with AMREF, Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the National Empowerment Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Kenya on a $1.8 million program to improve and strengthen HIV/AIDS health care at 60 facilities in the country. The project, which is funded by GSK's Positive Action program, aims to train health care workers and integrate community support and outreach services to fight AIDS-related stigma and discrimination (Joint release, 10/19).

  • Ms. Foundation for Women 10-Point Call To Action: The 10-point plan, which was developed by almost 20 U.S.-based organizations led by HIV-positive women and funded by the Ms. Foundation, calls on federal lawmakers and the public to make women a priority in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The public can sign an online petition, titled "Address the Neglected Truth," that urges legislators to adopt the plan (Ms. Foundation release, 10/20).

  • NO/AIDS Task Force Virtual Walk: The New Orleans-based NO/AIDS Task Force is holding a "Virtual Walk" to replace its annual NO/AIDS Walk, which was canceled because of Hurricane Katrina. The Virtual Walk runs from Oct. 12 through Dec. 16, and "walkers" can register online. The funds raised from the Virtual Walk will go toward rebuilding NO/AIDS and continuing services to the organization's clients, who are now spread throughout the country (NO/AIDS Web site, 10/24).
