Young Adults Represent More Than Half of People Living With HIV in Vietnam, Health Official Says

More than half of the 87,000 HIV-positive people living in Vietnam are young adults between the ages of 16 and 30, an unnamed Ministry of Health official said on Monday at an HIV/AIDS prevention training course, VNA/Thanh Nien News reports. Most HIV-positive young adults in Vietnam contract the virus through injection drug use, the official said, adding that men comprise 85% of all people living with the virus in the country. In addition, there have been new HIV cases among pregnant women, teenagers and children under five years old, the official said. The workshop, which was organized by the Vietnam Family Planning Association and the Family Planning Union of East and Southeast Asia, provided youth advocates with prevention education methods (VNA/Thanh Nien News, 9/20).
