NPR's "All Things Considered" to Air AIDS Diary Project

April 19, 2006

NPR's "All Things Considered" on Wednesday is scheduled to air a Radio Diaries segment titled, "The AIDS Diary Project: A Year in the Life of a South African Teenager." Thembi, a 19-year-old HIV-positive resident of the township of Khayelitsha, South Africa, recorded an audio diary of her life for the past year, including talking to her mother about HIV/AIDS, visiting the township clinic to apply for antiretroviral drugs, interacting with friends and neighbors as they learn her HIV status and spending time with her boyfriend (Richman, "All Things Considered," NPR, 4/19). The segment will be translated into Xhosa and Zulu and also will be broadcast in South Africa. CDs of the segment and a companion toolkit will be distributed to schools and HIV/AIDS organizations in the U.S. and South Africa. In addition, Thembi will visit the U.S. beginning this month to participate in town hall discussions in several cities, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C., as well as give interviews on local radio stations including KCRW, KPCC, WAMU, WBEZ, WBUR and WNYC. Richman's reporting project was sponsored by a Kaiser Family Foundation journalism fellowship award (Radio Diaries release, 4/19).

The complete segment will be available online in RealPlayer after the broadcast.

A Kaisernetwork.org interview with Joe Richman, executive producer of Radio Diaries Productions, is available online.
