Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report Summarizes Reports Released at XVI International AIDS Conference

As part of its expanded coverage of the XVI International AIDS Conference, held August 13 through August 18 in Toronto, the Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report will feature studies and initiatives released during the conference. Summaries of select publications and initiatives appear below.

• "Preventing HIV/AIDS in Young People: A Systematic Review of the Evidence From Developing Countries," World Health Organization: The report, released Wednesday at the AIDS conference, summarizes and analyzes a number of HIV prevention strategies targeted at young people at high risk of contracting HIV. The report -- which examines more than 80 studies that looked at HIV prevention strategies used by schools, health services, communities and the media in developing countries -- categorizes the strategies in terms of usefulness and makes recommendations for future HIV prevention strategies for young people. "With 40% of all new adult HIV infections occurring among young people aged 15 to 24, more investment in comprehensive HIV prevention efforts for young people is absolutely critical. We need youth-specific HIV prevention programs to be based on what has been proven to work and tailored to countries' individual epidemics and realities," Purnima Mane, UNAIDS director of policy, evidence and partnerships, said (WHO release, 8/15).
