U.S. News Duke University Appoints Director of New Global Health InstituteJuly 26, 2006 Duke University has appointed Michael Merson director of the university's new Global Health Institute, the AP/Long Island Newsday reports. Merson is the former director of the World Health Organization's AIDS Program and current director of Yale University's Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS. The Global Health Institute aims to bring together business students, engineering students and students from other academic areas to address global health issues comprehensively, with a focus on health inequalities between developing countries and wealthy nations, the AP/Newsday reports. "It's a very exciting opportunity," Merson said Tuesday in a telephone interview, adding, "When I was there (at Duke), I was so impressed with the plans and the commitment. It was a unique chance to make a difference in the world's health." Merson will begin his directorship on Nov. 1 (Gartner, AP/Long Island Newsday, 7/25). Back to other news for July 26, 2006
