U.S. Must Help Reduce Spread of HIV/AIDS Globally Among Children, Editorial Says

July 31, 2006

While the U.S. "shouldn't forget the battle" against HIV/AIDS domestically, the country "should also be fighting AIDS overseas ... because too many children are suffering and dying," a Winston-Salem Journal editorial says. About 570,000 children died of AIDS-related complications in 2005, and the "heartbreaking thing is that many of those deaths don't have to happen," the editorial says. The Global Movement for Children has issued an "urgent appeal" to governments, donors and pharmaceutical companies to address pediatric HIV/AIDS, and more "Americans should respond to this appeal," the editorial says, concluding, "The alternative is beyond grim. Americans and the rest of the world can't fail these children" (Winston-Salem Journal, 7/27).
