FDA Approves Bayer's Automated HIV Test

Bayer on Wednesday announced it has received FDA approval for its automated HIV test, which detects all known types of the virus, Reuters reports (Reuters, 6/21). The test -- called EHIV -- is a diagnostic test that detects antibodies to HIV 1, HIV 2 and a subtype of HIV 1 in human serum and plasma, according to a Bayer press release. The test will be used as part of Bayer's ADVIA Centaur Immunoassay System, which screens for HIV and a broad range of other conditions including cancer, allergies and metabolic diseases. The EHIV test is the first fully automated HIV test; it eliminates manual labor and produces more accurate results (Bayer release, 6/21). The test is manufactured and sold by Bayer for Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, the AP/Houston Chronicle reports (AP/Houston Chronicle, 6/21).
