Kids TalkWinter 1996 Although this poem doesn't go into the details of what it has been like for this 12 year old boy, I believe you will see the value of his insight. I speak from personal experience regarding this child, as he is my grandson. He has lost both of his parents to AIDS. A Poemby Daniel, 12 years old
If I did, I'd be acting like a fool. I know what it's like to lose family to drugs. They no longer give kisses or hugs. These people I loved now are dead. They will never again lie in their own bed. When Officer Filley came to class, he said: "Take drugs and it will get you dead". For some this cut like a brand new knife. But for me, I've known this in my life. I've learned a lot from Robert Filley, and sometimes he was just plain silly. If the world were a perfect place people wouldn't kill their own human race. Robert Filley is the police officer who came to Daniel's school from the DARE program, an educational project to help keep kids off drugs.
