U.K. Announces $200 Million in Aid to China for Development Programs, Including TB, HIV/AIDS Efforts

The U.K. Department for International Development on Thursday announced plans to provide almost $200 million over the next five years in aid to help China tackle issues related to poverty, including HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, China Daily reports (South, China Daily, 5/19). Adrian Davis, head of DFID in China, said the aid package will focus on reaching the U.N. Millennium Development Goals in the country (Asia in Focus, 5/19). Most of the funding will go to western China to support HIV/AIDS and TB programs, as well as water, sanitation and education efforts. Although the money represents less than 0.1% of China's gross domestic product, the United Kingdom is providing technical skill and expertise that China otherwise might not have, Davis said (China Daily, 5/19).
