Fight Against AIDS in Africa Taking Root at Baltimore Institute

July 16, 2003

The Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore is using a $4.4 million grant to help train Nigerian health care providers in AIDS research, clinical care and prevention. Twenty Nigerian health professionals underwent a 30-day training program at the institute in May, and another training is scheduled for September. The recently awarded Global AIDS Program grant from CDC has also been used to create four centers for excellence in HIV care and prevention in Nigeria, according to Dr. William Blattner, head of IHV's epidemiology division. Each center is a network of hospitals, clinics and community organizations.
