Playboy Sex Survey Presents Interesting Results

Playboy has just published their sex survey for 2011 and from a sex education stand point its a good one. The questions varied from number of sex partners to how many people answer the phone during sex (16%). Some results were no surprise to this Examiner (men cheat more frequently than women -- I'm looking right at you Arnold). Other results were disappointing in the world of HIV prevention. Here are a few notable highlights and how they connect to prevention and education.

  • Number of people who lost their virginity before the age of 18 -- 50% (total). Out of that total 4% lost it before age 13. Ewwww!! It's way past time to take a closer look at comprehensive sex education that includes abstinence, barrier methods and all sexual orientations.
  • Number of people who don't worry about protection (or don't mention it and hope for the best) from an STD before the first sexual encounter with a new partner -- 22%. Again, I say, Ewww!!! Hoping for the best is right up there with the rhythm method; simply ineffective.
  • Number of people who have had sex more than once during a sexual encounter -- 25% total. Wow! So having three condoms on hand is a safe bet. You never know what could come up after a post-sex snack and a nap.
  • Number of people who have been diagnosed with an STD -- 11%. Out of that number 18% of them never reported it to their partner. Yikes!
  • Number of people who have ever been tested for HIV -- 44% Yes. That's a sad number considering we are 30 years into this thing. We have to do better than this. It's imperative to know your status especially after the number of people who don't think about protection before sex.
  • Number of people who engage in anal intercourse once or twice a month -- 4%. The rectum is a very sensitive area that can be easily ruptured and lead to bleeding. Two words: Lube up.
  • Number of people that perform oral sex on their partner at every encounter -- 15%. Most times but not always -- 23%. Just remember that oral sex can lead to a "happy ending" like no other (especially when it's good). But once semen or vaginal fluid is ingested it's out of your hands (literally). And if your partner is HIV positive, there's no guarantee that you will escape infection by sticking to oral sex exclusively. There are non-lubricated and flavored condoms for this occasion.
