Being Optimistic: Hard but Possible
By Teniecka Drake

Hello! My name is Teniecka Drake and I have been interviewed on a few occasions for TheBody.com. I have three children all under the age of three and I am excited to be blogging for TheBody.com. I really wanted to be able to have an even more personal touch along with the interviews.
I'm also in Ebony Magazine, in the April 2011 issue. That came about by the editor seeing me on the Who's Positive Web site. Who's Positive is the organization that runs the tour I was on in 2006. The Ebony editor contacted Tom Donohue, the founder, and he contacted me. That was very exciting, to see myself in a nationally known magazine! I'm excited to say the Ebony issue is so good. I surprised myself that I looked so happy!
I have actually started the Peer Mentoring program here in my community. I was also asked to come on board and be one of the trainers because they did not have a female trainer. I am also going to Kaplan University online for a degree in Business Administration. My ultimate goals are pretty lofty, but I don't think they are impossible to reach. I really want to open my own restaurant as well as help my husband start a trucking company. The last thing that I really want to do is open a nonprofit for homeless people. Sometimes, looking around in my own community, my heart goes out to them. It really is heartbreaking to see women and children on the street. All these plans are for the far future; right now, I'm also blogging to give encouragement.
Being HIV positive is not going to always be a positive stroll in the park. Sometimes, for me personally, I like talking about other things. I am a very big Disney and full-length animation lover. Call me a big kid at heart but, hey, it helps me enjoy life! I love to sing along with the music like in The Princess and the Frog -- I really get my groove on, just cutting up. Knocking over tables, knocking my husband out ... I am not a very good dancer. (That's our little secret -- don't tell anyone!). I mean after my diagnosis, I really have taken life for more fun!!!
My life has been very different -- not all negative. My life's journey has been quite exciting and I have not always enjoyed the ride. Now I have reached a place in my life where it is not a dark, gloomy place. I am trying to be more involved and hopefully many more opportunities will present themselves to me. I also have submitted an application for the AIDS Alliance for Children Youth & Families' CLCTP (Consumer Leadership Corps Training Program). That is for the September 2011 entry, so I'm hoping and praying that I get accepted.
I am excited and just happy! Being positive even in times of pain, sorrow and sadness is hard, but it can be done. I will do my best to blog often, and keep my positive outlook on life, and share encouraging words for anyone who may need a boost. My life will be a testimony for others; and to be a support person is my goal.
Everyone is special, and being HIV positive does not make a person less special.
