A Poem by GaryG

April 2011

GaryG was diagnosed in February 1997 and is doing well at 57 years old. This poem is dedicated in the memory of his best friend. The DC AIDSRides used to have kickoff parties in January to get people signed up for the ride in July. He wrote this poem on the anniversary of his best friend's death, which happened to be the night of one of the parties.

Prayer on a Dark Anniversary

Carefully walking home from a bar at night
while remembering you
and what I was out for.

A kickoff party in January
for a fundraiser in July.

I do it every year,
in memory,
and in conversation,
with you

who have been gone since 13 years ago today.

Oh Michael
you should have had the chance I was given

But hard as we tried
and much as we loved you
and as smart and as strong as you tried to hold on

The medicine came
just a little bit too late.

And I am here and you are gone
because the medicine came in time for me.

Oh, Michael, Michael, Michael,
Oh, Michael, my Michael, my brother, my friend

I know you hate it when I get maudlin
But there are no words for how I miss you.
