International News Fifty Percent of AIDS Patients in Latin America Receive TreatmentApril 19, 2011 About half of the 600,000 people living with HIV in Latin America are receiving treatment, UNAIDS' regional director said Sunday in Panama City, Panama. "We have to work a lot for the other half to get treatment," said Cesar Nunez, who was attending the 124th Inter-Parliamentarian Union Assembly. He called on governments in the region to redouble their efforts to contain the pandemic by strengthening prevention campaigns. "The availability of the medicines has grown in the last 10 years, and the countries have taken this commitment; however, the number of infections each time is bigger than the number of people we can treat." The meeting, which has attracted 800 parliamentarians from 125 nations, concludes Wednesday.
