California: Solano College Hosts Event to Raise HIV/AIDS Awareness

March 8, 2011

This Saturday, the Solano County Collaboration for HIV/AIDS Awareness is presenting its eighth annual teen expo. The theme for this year's event is "A Passport for Health: It's All About Choices."

The coalition launched the effort in part as a response to high rates of HIV infection among African Americans in the county. More than 900 county residents are living with HIV/AIDS, and 35 percent of them are black.

"It worries me that anybody gets infected [with HIV], but why can't people of color understand what's going on?" asked Eva Coley. She is among event organizers and a member of Delta Sigma Theta, an international sorority primarily comprising black women, whose mission includes promoting physical and mental health.

The expo will seek "to educate the kids, to help them make the right choices," Coley said. "We're also talking to the girls about violence, about how not to set yourself up for violence." This year for the first time, females and males will be separated during the seminars.

Door-prizes, performances and a free lunch will be included in the expo, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., March 12, at Solano Community College, 4000 Suisun Valley Rd., Bldg. 1400, in Fairfield.

Registration and a permission slip are required for attendance; visit www.scchaa.com or telephone 707-643-9171.
