International News Kazakhstan Registers Some 16,000 HIV CarriersMarch 7, 2011 For the five-month period ending Feb. 1, Kazakhstan registered 590 HIV infections, for a cumulative total of 15,908 cases to date, officials said Thursday. Of cases, 44.7 percent are ages 20-29; 33 percent are ages 30-39; and 12 percent are ages 40-49, said Marat Tukeyev, director of the Center for Prevention and Control of AIDS. "Intravenous transmission still poses the highest risk of infection (65.9 percent), while sexual exposure" is second, Tukeyev said. The rate of new infections has slowed by 8 percent per year since 2008, and AIDS-related mortality has dropped 50 percent from four years ago to 2010.
