Activist Alert: AIDS Conferences on the HorizonFebruary 14, 2011
The Update is giving readers a heads up about two AIDS activist meet-ups happening this year: "It's Not Over Yet"The Campaign to End AIDS Annual HIV & AIDS Advocacy SummitApril 17-20, 2011 Purpose: Activists descend on Kansas City to share ideas about how to push for HIV/AIDS policy changes in their regions. They'll also brainstorm ways to foster change on the national level. Specifically, we will look at the implementation of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy and assess its effectiveness in addressing the factors that most contribute to the growth of the epidemic. Highlights: Invited guests include Jeffrey Crowley, director of the White Houses' Office of National AIDS Policy; and Christopher Bates, director of the Office of HIV/AIDS Policy at Health and Human Services. North American Housing and HIV/AIDS Summit VISeptember 21-23, 2011 Who: Leading North American experts on the subject of housing as HIV/AIDS prevention, in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Purpose: For the sixth year, researchers, policy experts and activists share findings on the relationship between housing status and HIV prevention. Highlights: The theme of this year's summit is "Eliminating HIV Health Disparities," with a focus on the potential of housing strategies to address inequalities in HIV health outcomes and to end the AIDS crisis by preventing new infections. Share your work: Conference sponsors seek abstracts that present scientific research, economic analyses, program evaluations, community-based interventions, and public policy strategies that reflect this year's theme, "Eliminating HIV Health Disparities." These abstracts should focus on the potential of housing strategies to reduce health inequities for people living with HIV and prevent new infections. Abstracts are due April 15.
