Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum Statement on the President's FY2012 BudgetFebruary 18, 2011 This article was provided by the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF). On Monday, February 14, President Obama released his budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2012 which aims to reduce the national deficit and put the country on a path towards fiscal sustainability. To our disappointment, there were a number of spending reductions and freezes to critical health-related programs. We fully understand and appreciate the President's efforts to preserve core initiatives to reduce health and health care disparities but believe certain proposed spending reductions will disproportionately impact vulnerable Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities. "The President's Budget for Fiscal Year 2012 represents a commitment to reducing our nation's deficit through cost saving measures found in the Affordable Care Act while increasing resources towards investments in innovation and education," said Kathy Lim Ko, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum. "While these reductions represent important steps, we cannot make cuts to programs that improve the lives of our most vulnerable and help put them on a path out of poverty. APIAHF will continue to work with our partners and Members of Congress to ensure that programs that serve low income, immigrant, and Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities are bolstered." APIAHF will dedicate our efforts to protecting programs supported by the President's budget such as:
Additionally, we will strategically engage Congress and the Administration to address funding levels in Community Services Block Grant, Low Income Housing Energy Assistance Program, Maternal and Child Health Special Projects of National Significance, Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health, and the Office of Minority Health.
