Prevention/Epidemiology Safe Sex on TV: Some Teen Shows Neglect Protection -- POZ, January/February IssueFebruary 18, 2011 The January/February issue of POZ magazine ranks several television shows aimed at young audiences on whether their storylines involve preventing STDs or unwanted pregnancy. On a scale of one to 10 condoms (one being the lowest), "Glee" got the lowest rank because the characters Artie and Brittany never broached the subject of protection before having sex; "Gossip Girl" received a three for its story of Serena battling a rumor she has an STD, though she was not shown getting tested, and for a scene involving Chuck and Blair when Chuck puts condoms into view; "90210" received a four for an episode in which Dixon's ex-girlfriend Sasha announces she is HIV-positive and he gets tested to learn his status; and "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" earned six for stories involving oral contraception adherence, breaking condoms, and safe-sex public service announcements that followed racy episodes.
