Malaysian Women in Conservative State Hit by HIV: Report
December 9, 2010
The national news agency Bernama reports that Malaysia's most conservative state -- Kelantan, which is ruled by the hardline Islamic PAS party -- has the country's highest HIV/AIDS rate. The situation is blamed on husbands who cross the border into Thailand, have sex with prostitutes, and infect their wives. Malaysian AIDS Council President Zaman Khan said men from Kelantan visit the Thai border town of Sungai Golok, "and after engaging with prostitutes, they return to their wives and pass on the disease." In World AIDS Day remarks, Hasan Abdul Rahman, the Health Department's deputy director-general, said the HIV infection rate in Kelantan is four times the national average.
