10th Annual Heroes in the Struggle

The Black AIDS Institute and the Magic Johnson Foundation commemorated World AIDS Day with the 10th Annual Heroes in the Struggle (HITS) Gala Reception, Silent Auction and Awards Presentation. HITS is a photographic tribute to people who have made heroic contributions in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Each year new Heroes are added to the exhibit. This year's portraits, shot by top notch top photographers including Kwaku Alston, Duane Cramer, Darien Davis, Ben Hider, and Matthew Jordan Smith, were unveiled at a star-studded event at the Avalon Hollywood.

This years heroes included: President Bill Clinton, Founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States; Blair Underwood, Award-Winning Actor, "The Event"; Lee L. Daniels, Academy Award-Nominated Producer and Director. "Precious"; Sheila C. Johnson, Businesswoman and Philanthropist, Executive Producer, "The Other City," Marvelyn Brown, AIDS Activist; Frank Oldham, Jr., President, National Association of People With AIDS; Willis Edwards, Civil Rights Icon, Board Member, NAACP; Robi Reed, Award-Winning Producer, Casting Director, "For Colored Girls"; National Basketball Association, Corporate Hero.

The evening included celebrity presentations and performances by Tatyana Ali, Essence Atkins, Sharif Atkins, Michael Beach, Marc Brown, Rhyon Brown, Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Myrlie Evers-Williams, Kevin Eubanks, Kevin Frazier, Omari Hardwick, Hill Harper, Darrin Henson, Dule Hill, Aldis Hodge, Boris Kodjoe, Kenny Latimore, Nicole Ari Parker, Michaela Pereira, Tanika Ray, Lamman Rucker, Tasha Smith, Bobbe' J. Thompson, Tessa Thompson, Kym Whitley, Jesse Williams, Oren Williams, Vanessa Williams, Zachary Williams, along with show stopping musical performances by Kevin Eubanks, Kenny Latimore, Paige Bryant, Yvette Cason, Berlando Drake, Miki Howard, Nic Jackson, Nina Storey, Deniece Williams, and Vesta Williams.
