International News World Bank to Provide New Anti-AIDS Loan for BrazilOctober 6, 2010 Under an agreement signed Tuesday with the Ministry of Health, the World Bank will provide a new loan of $67 million to help Brazil prevent and treat HIV and other STDs. Since recording its first HIV case in 1982, Brazil's government has worked aggressively with civil society groups to fight the epidemic. Its HIV case count at the end of 2007 -- 730,000 -- was half the number predicted in estimates a decade earlier. The ministry said the new loan represents less than 2 percent of Brazil's budget for anti-STD measures in 2011.
