Pennsylvania: Valley Activists Still Fighting -- FACT Continues to Raise Money and Awareness About AIDS

September 20, 2010

FACT (Fighting AIDS Continuously Together) marks its 25th anniversary this month. The Lehigh Valley non-profit's longevity surprises even board members like Lou James, who recalls that in the late 1980s, some experts were predicting a cure for HIV within four years.

Providing those affected by HIV/AIDS with a better life has long been FACT's top mission. Since its founding in 1986, the organization has raised more than $2 million, donating money to individuals and families, and to AIDS prevention and research.

Approximately 38,000 people with HIV/AIDS are living in Pennsylvania, said FACT board member David Moyer. Though the virus first spread among the gay community, it now also disproportionately affects blacks and Latinos. Yet it has been a struggle to reach these populations, said Moyer.

Allentown Health Bureau Director Vicky Kistler said, "Whenever you're dealing with cultural factors, when it comes to diseases or prevention there's always some challenges. We face the same issues reaching the minority population." AHB has worked closely with FACT since the non-profit's founding.

Kistler said the silver anniversary is a "wonderful testimony of what volunteers banding together can actually accomplish." "They're working just as diligently as they were 25 years ago, and I think that's pretty cool."
