Responding to a worrying spike in new HIV/AIDS diagnoses, the Philippines health department today vowed to increase its outreach to those most at risk. The nation logged 109 new HIV/AIDS cases in June, compared to 40 for June 2009. In the first six months of 2010, the department tallied 809 HIV/AIDS cases, compared to 362 for the same period last year. Gerard Belimac, manager of the AIDS and STD prevention effort, said the department will boost its efforts to educate drug injectors, sex workers, and men who have sex with men. The Philippines has registered 6,042 HIV/AIDS cases since record-keeping began in 1984.
