Young People Encouraged to Join Fight Against AIDS and HIV

July 20, 2010

The battle against HIV/AIDS will be won only if young people are on board, top international health experts said Monday at the 18th International AIDS Conference in Vienna. Jan Beagle, deputy executive director of UNAIDS, and Mats Ahnlund, acting executive director of the International AIDS Society, called on young people to increase their participation in HIV-related programming and policy-making. The latest data from IAS show nearly half of all new HIV infections globally are among people under age 25. Estimates show more than 7,400 people become HIV-infected daily, 3,300 of them young people. Youths remain the group most vulnerable to HIV infection due to many factors, including lack of information, societal influences, and inadequate access to health care. One of the highlights of the conference is its youth program, which aims to get more young people involved in HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care, and support efforts, said Beagle.
