When Jimmy Mack discovered he was HIV positive, it was 1987, and an HIV diagnosis was essentially a death sentence. So instead of seeing a doctor, he dived into cocaine and alcohol. His journey has been difficult, but Jimmy has now been clean and sober for more than 15 years.

The U.S. military's now defunct "Don't ask, Don't tell" policy got Enrique Franco discharged from the Army. It also, oddly, was the reason he found out he was HIV positive. As Enrique explains in this moving interview, diagnosis turned his life upside down, but he's now standing tall.

Robert Mintz"Concerning my sexual orientation, when I came home from Vietnam and decided I had to come out to my father, I was scared of how he'd respond. I took him to a park, because then if he was going to do anything he'd have to do it in public, you know? Before I even opened my mouth, he said, 'Son, God gave you to me, and nothing's gonna take you away from me.' I told him, 'Your son's gay,' and he said, 'Your point is?'"
