May 24: AIDS Housing Resolution to Be Considered on House Floor Today

Housing status is one of the strongest predictors of health outcomes for PLWHA: lack of housing is a barrier to care, while increased housing stability enables PLWHA to obtain and adhere to life-saving medical care and antiretroviral therapy.

Dear NAHC Members and Supporters,

The Majority Leader's Office has posted the legislative schedule for Monday, May 24 and it includes the AIDS Housing resolution (H. Con. Res. 137) to be taken up under suspension of the rules. This vote comes nearly one year after introduction of the resolution by Rep. Nadler of New York. Although the measure is cosponsored by 40 House members from both sides of the aisle, including Chairman Frank of the House Financial Services Committee, broad support is needed to achieve adoption under suspension of the rules.

The resolution is a powerful statement of Congress' recognition that the lack of adequate housing must be addressed as a barrier to effective HIV prevention, treatment, and care, and that the United States should make a commitment to providing adequate funding for developing housing as a response to the AIDS pandemic.
