Illinois: Federal Inquiry Targets Chicago Health Center

April 27, 2010

Chicago's Howard Brown Health Center on Monday released a statement saying it is being investigated by the National Institutes of Health. NIH's investigation concerns the alleged misuse of funds associated with the Multi-Center AIDS Cohort Study (MACS), a decades-long project researching HIV-positive men. "We want to [assure] the community that the integrity of the research surrounding the MACS or any other study at Howard Brown has not been questioned," said Paul Fairchild, HBHC's interim chief operating officer. HBHC is one of the nation's largest LGBT health care organizations; it recently severed ties with Michael Cook, its chief executive officer, and Mark Joslyn, its chief financial officer. According to the statement, HBHC is cooperating with NIH and has begun an independent audit of all its federal grants.
