Frequently Asked Questions About Podcasts

What is a podcast?

A podcast is an audio or video file that you can download and play on your computer or digital music player. It's like listening to a radio program or watching TV, except you can listen or watch whenever you want.

What's the easiest way to listen to The Body's "This Month in HIV" podcasts?

The Body has its own online podcast player, which you can use by clicking on the "Listen" link from any podcast page. A new window will open and the podcast will begin playing immediately.

I clicked on the "Listen" link, but nothing happened. What's the problem?

Your popup blocker may be disabling our podcast player. On a PC, try holding down the Ctrl key while you click on the link. That may allow the page to open. On a Mac/Apple computer, hold down the Ctrl key while you click, then select "Open Link in New Window" from the menu. If neither of these work, you may need to disable your popup blocker. Click here to learn more about disabling your popup blocker.

I clicked on the "Listen" link, and an empty window opened. What went wrong?

The Body's podcast player needs a program called Flash Player in order to load. You probably need to install Flash Player. Click here to learn more.

I can't hear the podcast. What gives?

First, make sure that the volume on The Body's podcast player is turned up. (The volume button is at the bottom of the player.) If it is, and you still can't hear anything, you may need to turn up the volume on your computer. On a PC, under the Start menu, select "Settings," then "Control Panel." Click on "Sounds and Multimedia." On the Sounds tab, turn up the volume. On a Mac/Apple computer, select "System Preferences" from the Applications folder on your hard drive. Select "Sound" under "Hardware." Adjust volume under "Sound Effects."

What if I want to download a podcast so I can listen to it later?

Depending on what type of computer you use and how it's set up, there may be different ways for you to download a podcast. The easiest way to download one of The Body's podcasts is to click on the "Download" link for the podcast you're interested in. (On some computers, this will make the podcast play immediately. On other computers, a box might appear on your screen that asks you if you want to play the podcast now or download it to your computer.) If you're using a Windows computer, you can also right-click on the link and choose "Save Target As" (if you're using Internet Explorer) or "Save Link As" (if you're using Firefox).

Whatever you decide to do, in order to download a podcast to play later, you'll need digital music software (like iTunes, MusicMatch, RealPlayer, Winamp or Windows Media Player) installed on your computer, or you'll need a portable digital music player (like an iPod). Check the instructions on your software or player for more information about downloading and listening to audio files.
