International News S. African President Meets Gates on HIV/AIDSDecember 3, 2009 On Wednesday in Pretoria, President Jacob Zuma met with U.S. billionaire Bill Gates for a discussion about South Africa's struggle against HIV/AIDS. According to the South African Press Association, spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the men talked about the need to ramp up prevention, including efforts to block mother-to-child HIV transmission and to promote male circumcision. Zuma noted that the issue of circumcision must be approached carefully so as not to give the impression that the procedure, which studies have shown reduces the risk of female-to-male HIV transmission, confers complete immunity to the virus. Gates also met with Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, who chairs South Africa's National AIDS Council.
