International News Laos Reports 3,395 Cases of HIV/AIDS, 960 DeathsOctober 29, 2009 According to new statistics from the Center for HIV/AIDS/Sexually Transmitted Infections, Laos in recent years has recorded 3,395 HIV cases, of whom 2,180 have progressed to AIDS and 960 have died. Estimates suggest there are actually 8,000 HIV cases in the nation. The center also said that while the number of opium addicts has declined from 60,000 in 2000, an estimated 30,000 Laotians are now users of methamphetamine. The National Strategic and Action Plan on HIV/AIDS/STDs anticipates that by 2010 at least 70 percent of injection drug users in Laos will practice sterile injecting techniques.
