International News Irish Heroin Use "National Crisis": CharityOctober 9, 2009 The drug addiction charity Merchants Quay Ireland announced recently that heroin use is on the rise, and it called for increased treatment and support services to help prevent the spread of HIV and hepatitis C through needle sharing. Last year, the group provided syringe-exchange services to more than 5,280 people, of whom 1,000 were new clients. "In 2008 we have seen an alarming increase in drug use outside of Dublin. Heroin respects no borders, and users are now to be found in all areas," said Tony Geoghegan, MQI's chief executive. "Cities such as Cork and Waterford that might have been considered relatively unscathed five years ago now have significant problems. Heroin use is a national crisis," he said.
