Federal Grant Boosts HIV Research in Chicago

In Chicago, the Developmental Center for AIDS Research won a five-year, $3.75 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, affiliates of the center recently announced. DCAR will integrate basic science, clinical studies, and research on HIV/AIDS with three concentrations: women, aging, and drug use.

DCAR research will be of practical benefit for health providers, said Dr. Alan Landay, its director and chairperson of immunology and microbiology at Rush University Medical Center. The other DCAR affiliates are the University of Illinois-Chicago and Cook County Health and Hospital Systems.

"This research will provide opportunities for us to share and build upon our varied expertise and perspectives," said Dr. Robert Bailey, DCAR's co-director.

The county health system's participation will especially help DCAR better evaluate how HIV/AIDS affects low-income minority patients, said Dr. Audrey French, research director at the system's Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center. More than 5,000 HIV patients each year visit the center, which will facilitate DCAR's implementation of clinical research.
